coaxial connectors are used primarily inside MRI and other medical imaging equipment.
Magnetic resonance imaging produces high-resolution cross-sectional images of the inside of the human body by exploiting radio frequency (RF) pulses.
has seen tremendous improvements in recent years with continued advances in technology, a small part of which is due to coaxial non-magnetic connectors.
non-magnetic connectors have extremely low magnetic susceptibility so that they are not magnetized by the fields created in.
MAGNETIC / NON-MAGNETIC
We at elspec group are able to measure any cable or connector of the manufacturer due to our in-house production. Also cable assemblies manufactured by us are measured by us, which is why we can deliver a high quality standard. This is extremely important in the magnetic or non-magnetic area, since the requirements vary here and usually the smallest details in the selection of materials can influence or falsify the measurements or applications of the customers.
THATS WHY WE DIVIDED OUR PRODUCTS INTO THREE CATEGORIES
- Full magnetic > 1000 nT - for application where is no requirement needed
- Medium Magnetic between 100 nT and 1000 nT - for application where the cables are not allowed to be torn or damaged by the strong Magenetfields
- Non-magnetic < 100 nT - For application primarily in medicine in MRI - imaging techniques and sensors
NON-MAGNETIC MATERIALS
Copper beryllium | Non-magnetic brass | Bronze | Plastics
Silver: If nickel has been incorporated under the silver layer and this has not been sufficiently doped with phosphorus, this material also has magnetic characteristics.
Brass: Brass is an alloy and depending on the material used by the manufacturer for this alloy, magnetic properties can also occur here.
Stainless steel: Stainless steel is generally classified as non-magnetic. However, if stainless steel is examined more closely, it still has magnetic properties from a microscopic point of view. It is therefore important to pay close attention to the values when measuring, because it can still have magnetic specifications and cause interference in some applications.
Requirements for cables and connectors in these categories vary from application to application. To define exactly which connector, cable or assembly is the right solution for your application we need the following information from you:
- Operating frequency
- Application area
- Interface Connector
Details about the measurement at elspec group: To perform the measurement, the object to be measured is brought into contact with a magnet. Then we remove the magnet and place the object on a sensor. After a waiting time of one minute, the magnetic value of the object remains, which we record for the customer after each measurement. If you wish a more detailed procedure of the measurement or a classification, we will be glad to implement it.
MAGNETIC / NON-MAGNETIC
It is important here to discuss the exact requirements with the manufacturer in order to avoid magnetic materials in the structure. We only offer products that exactly fit your application and have already pre-selected the manufacturers.
General information about the application and the requirements for non-magnetic cables and connectors:
Medical MRI equipment consists of a large magnet or electromagnet that generates an intense and homogeneous magnetic field (0.3 to 7 T) that surrounds the patient, "gradient coils" to position the area to be examined, and two radio frequency coils. One coil emits radiofrequency pulses of 20 to 300 MHz to excite the atomic nuclei in the area of interest. The other coil receives a signal representing the image after excitation. The signal is sent to a computer for processing and display. The quality of the image depends mainly on the homogeneity of the magnetic field and the signal-to-noise ratio. To avoid field homogeneity disturbances, the coaxial connectors and cables that are in the magnetic field to connect the coils should be transparent relative to the field, i.e., their relative permittivity μr should be equal to 1. High quality non-magnetic connectors have low magnetic susceptibility, so they are not magnetized by the fields generated in the field.
NON-MAGNETIC CONNECTORS
At elspec group, we first examined connectors using one of the most sensitive measuring instruments on the market. The reason for this is that connectors are multi-layered (a nut outside and a housing, inside a spring washer and inner conductor, a sleeve) and these can all be made of different materials and different layer structures. Brass is often used in plugs, and it is an alloy. Sometimes it can happen that this alloy has magnetic properties. If nickel is built into the connector and has not been sufficiently doped with phosphorus, this material also has magnetic characteristics. Even if stainless steel is non-magnetic, you should pay close attention to the values, because it can still have magnetic specifications and cause interference in some applications.
When producing non-magnetic connectors, we make sure that signals are not disturbed and that the connector works properly. That is why we only process connectors from selected manufacturers who use appropriate non-conductive materials in the cable construction. Nevertheless, these are measured again in our production after delivery to ensure that the properties are met.
